Aftercare and Residential Treatment

Overview
Aftercare and Residential Treatment is geared to assist adolescents in ending their use of mood altering drugs and to develop a commitment to recovery. We assist participants in resolving personal matters attributable to their drug use. Most importantly, we assist young people in discovering and using their abilities to become successful.

Aftercare Services
Youth completing treatment in an inpatient residential program are eligible for participation in Growth Works Aftercare Treatment services. Utilizing a group format two days a week, youth work with therapists and peers to develop and practice a relapse prevention plan. Therapeutic interventions assist clients in continuing to address core issues identified during inpatient treatment. The principles of Alcoholics Anonymous are emphasized as youth use their recovery skills to build sober support networks in the community, improve performance in school, behaviors at home, and develop life skills to assist them in future financial, employment and educational endeavors. Gender specific programming is available for adolescent females, tailored to their specific needs.

Residential Treatment-WCARE/I and Vassar House Programs
WCARE/I is a residential chemical dependency treatment program for adolescent males operated by Wolverine Human Services and Growth Works’ ARTx program. WCARE/I serves young men that are sent by Wayne County’s juvenile justice system and various State of Michigan Substance Abuse Coordinating Agencies, including SEMCA and the City of Detroit Substance Abuse Department. Operated on Wolverine Pioneer Campus, the program provides an intensive 90 day addiction treatment program, augmented by Wolverine’s educational, vocational and outdoor experiential educational programs.

Vassar House is a residential behavioral health program for young women operated by Wolverine Human Services and Growth Works’ ARTX program. The major focus of the 90 day treatment regimen is chemical dependency treatment and trauma recovery. A unique “trauma informed” behavioral approach is combined with Wolverine’s proven methods for working with young people to offer a state of the art effort, aimed at creating new options for young women. The program also serves the Wayne County juvenile justice system and various Substance Abuse Coordinating Agencies, including SEMCA. It is located adjacent to the Pioneer Work and Learn Campus.

Parent and Family Programs
Parent programming is an integral component of Growth Works’ Aftercare and Residential Treatment services. The residential program provides two opportunities for families to participate in treatment: Intervention and Family Week. These experiences provide an educational foundation for parents regarding adolescent addiction and its impact on the family. In addition, they allow for open, honest and safe communication regarding the adolescent’s use and family relationships. Ongoing parent groups are structured to provide support and address parental recovery issues in the adolescent’s aftercare treatment. Weekly participation is expected in this intensive program element. Treatment goals are established for parents aimed at improving family functioning, assisting their adolescent’s recovery, and addressing their own personal recovery.
